Single Cat and Y pipe Myth Destroyed

Destroyed indeed...

It was rumored that fitting a single Cat on theI section of an offroad Y-pipe would not work for emissions. The Origins of this rumor seemed to have spread from Thunderracing. I decided to engage upone this rumor and investigate for myself. I called thunderracing up and talked to one of thier techs. I asked about the set up, and they confirmed again, that it would not work, but little do they know I have proven the myth false... let it be known... you can use an off road Y pipe and a single cat.

The story:

I installed Jet hot hot Long tubes, ordered a Hooker Y pipe, 2 3inch cutouts, and a 3inch Dynatech Highflow cat running through a Borla XR-1. I cut the I section of the Y-pipe off and ground it down, I then had the Dynatech weleded in place of the removed section of pipe. With the little room and clearance... I added appx. 7 inches of pipe beween the Borla and the cat then kicked the rest of the pipe over the axle and out the rear.
Now I must admit that this 3 inch setup gets very hot... enough to melt the rear bumper and anything else in the way if not careful. I took the car to the DMV and waited in the lanes. Finally the day of judgement came. I rolled my car into the bay, and the State inspector proceeded to install the Smog sensor.... I sat there and waited patiently for the results... I was handed a piece of paper with my test data... and the vehicle passed without a hint of issues. With all the off road accessories... the car passed right on track. So after dealing with the issue first hand myself... I must say that the off road Y-pipe and cat set up works prefectly.

Awesome. I have been asking this question for a while and never getting a straight answer. I will be using almost the exact same setup except after the y-pipe running it into my Hooker Catback.

i think people were afraid that the cat wouldn't light off because its so far back. but with technology nowadays, you can do anything, i guess.

Great for the sniffer, but remember some people have to pass visual.

Or if you are in Oklahoma, well you know.
