single cat or dual??? HELP

ok.. i got a 1996 z28. i wanna by the borla catback system. i need to know how many cat it has.. when i looked under i saw one and there is another thing that looks like a cat but its smaller.. so i wasnt sure
i took it to a mechanic and he said trhere is one cast and one resinator.. so i guess that means my z28 has a sigle cat. but on borla's site it says that 93-95 has single cat which use one system and 95-97 are dual. so since mine is a 96 borla is sayin that i have 2 cat.. but i only see on my car.
so im confused which one to get. can someone help me with this? and tell me whats the part # for the borla exhaust that i need?
Thanx

Theres 2 cats. I have the same thing, 96 and borla. The part number is 1455 if I remember correctly but I suggest you confirm that. Driver side cat is RIGHT under the driver side exhaust manifold and the other is in plain view on the pass. side plus you have that hump in the floor panel for it.

The stock Y-pipe on the '96 is a dual cat setup. There is one under the passenger footwell and another directly after the manifold on the driver's side. It's canted at an angle, sloping away from the manifold. Your mechanic is misinformed. The differences in the Borla cat-back systems will be in the length of the intermediate pipe. The '96 Y-pipe extends further back than the '94-'95, so the intermediate pipe is different in order to bolt up correctly.

If you are talking about the small elliptical can on the passenger side, it is one of the catalysts. In stock form, there is no resonator.

As for changing the cats out, with the positioning of the driver's side cat, it's very difficult to just swap. Random Tech makes a replacement y-pipe with high flow cats. If you want to go with shorty headers later, they will bolt right to the y-pipe. There are lots of options if you want to change to a longer header, some involving more modification than others. The cat-back is a good route to go for. You'll see an improvement.
