Is it possible to just replace the mirror portion of the side mirrors? it would be cheaper than replacing the entire assembly. granted it wouldn't be easier. but it's worth a try right?

 

Yes, you can order the replacement mirror glass. Most auto parts stores will special order the glass for you for $20-25. There are also several internet sites where you can mail order the glass. I had to replace the passenger side glass. Since the rest of the housing was in good shape, replacing just the mirror glass was the best route. I ordered mine form Pep Boys. It took about a week for the mirror to arrive.
