should i replace while im at it???
ok so i have the motor out of my car and i was wondering since it has 100k on it should i replace the head gasket? i already have the timing cover gasket and seals, intake manifold gaskets, oil pan gasket....should i just replace the head gasket while im at ? how hard of a job is it? also do i need to have my heads machined to do so? i plan on putting on new heads and building the motor next summer i just dont wan any problems this summer...

i pulled the motor to replace the oil pan gasket timing cover gasket/seals rear main seal as well as opti spark plugs and header gaskets. i also have to take my trans into the shop for work so i figured id also pull the motor. i also plan on painting my motor and engine bay to freshen it up
Well buddy you do not have to machine the heads if you know for sure they have not been overheated at any time. This concluding that they are in very good shape. these heads if treated good will last forever. I have about two hundred and twenty thousand miles on my z before my rebuild and still had the original heads and head gasket and that was with it over heating twice which both times i just wound up changing out my intake gaskets only. So yeah the truth is if you have taken care of her then you dont have to worry about the heads or gasket at all. In my opinion if you are doing all these changes and cleaning her up and you have some extra money it wouldnt hurt taking the heads off and putting new gaskets on and you dont have to machine them in this case either if they have been taken care of. Usually if keeping the factory heads when someone machines the heads its just to get them back to factory specs to get them evenly flattened. But if they have been taken care of you can change the gasket without modding the heads at all.
Here's what you do...
Pull the heads.
Measure for flatness as outlined in the factory or a chiltons manual.
Get the heads machined if they fall out of spec.
It doesn't matter how many miles you have or what us internet experts have to say......measure and do what's needed.
Now on to the next thing. I would, without a doubt, take it to the shop and have them cleaned, have the guide clearances checked and have new valve seals put on. No better time than when the heads are off....
