Should I put in a cam in it?
Should I put in a cam in it?
Its a 95z28 with 73k miles. I drive it daily at least 45 miles a day, probably up to 60. I ordered 1.7 rockers, springs, pushrods, guideplates, etc but i wasnt really planning on doing a cam. Today my dad was like, do a cam not nitrous. So now im leaning towards the LT4 hotcam with 1.7 rr's.
Think this would be ok for my 73k miles car and daily driven. I do have a heavy foot but rarely go past 3k rpm.
Gas milage will go to crap. its at 13.5 mpg right now which gets expensive for as much as i drive my car. But ive always wanted a cam and I love the mean *** lope.

Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
From what i read all the time most people dont advise putting a cam in a car with over 100K. Since your car is less than 100K, most people are gonna tell you to go with the cam. I would go with the Hotcam.
you should be ok with it

Questions:
1. Wheres the cheapest place to buy a hotcam?
2. Will i need a stall converter?
3. Do i need to upgrade the timing chain?
4. Do i need to replace the lifters?

Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
I'd go bigger than the hotcam. I have a 227/233 in one of my cars and it runs great. I get 18-20 mpg with it in the city and it pulls pretty hard for a cammed LT1. It even passes emissions!
Replace the timing chain, atleast get a new GM one. The LT4 one is a good option, or go double roller.
Converter, it'll give you good gains. If I had an A4 it would have been one of my first mods.
Lifters, it depends what they look like when you take them out and which cam/valve springs you go with.. They'll probably be fine, though.

2. Yes, its a good mod on a stock cam car, but its deff recomended for a cam as the power band will be pushed up higher. Great mod though, I didnt want one at first, but after having it, wouldnt go back.
3. Either upgrade to a LT4 or use a new one.
4. They are comming out any way, cheap insurance, stock replacements will due. Its not mandatory, but they are comming out.
Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
Im not going bigger than the hot cam, this is my daily driven car. I dont want to have to fill my tank up every other day. And I cant afford a stall right now
Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
my formula gets great gas mileage with the hotcam in it. hell, i filled up in dallas yesterday, drove back from dallas to waco, and have been driving quite a bit all over waco yesterday and today and im not even to half a tank yet. course a lot of it was highway, and with the M6 it does great on the highway with 3.23's.
Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
IMO, the hotcam is a waste of time.
If you didn't drive the car as hard you could get better mileage out of it... Just a thought, though I realized it's a sports car you're supposed to enjoy it.
Out of any of the firebirds/camaro's i've owned I have NEVER gotten anything less than 15 mpg. And getting that low I was constantly beating on the car. If you're really getting 13.5 mpg I'd be checking to make sure it was running right..

Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
It may be about time for a tune up, but ever since i put these 3.73s in, the gas milage went down the ****ter. The plugs arent that old. the wires are. I replaced the opti probably 20k ago, and 02s about 10k ago.
Id really love to have a cam like the XE 224/230, but i need something that will go with my stock stall.

Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
I put the Hot Cam kit in my car at 104k and have put 5k on it so far with no problems. I would also change the pushrods, lifters, timing chain, opti, and valve seals, all with the hot cam kit. Have fun.
Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
I'm going to be one of those guys who doesn't necessarily recommend a cam. I just put a new valvetrain(except lifters) in this weekend. While it wasn't a ton of work, putting a cam in adds a lot more work. I looked at the engine and thought, "Do I really want to dig in there and possibly screw up my engine that runs so well?"
I would recommend that you try the new valvetrain, and then see if you want a cam after that. If you have good springs, you won't need to change them if you put a new cam in anyways.

Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
hell if you've got the space and time to put in a cam then I say do it. Just take your time and make sure you do everything right, keep everything clean nd neat, mark or take pictures if you have to of lines, orjust mark htem like i did. Also put all the bolts and nuts in bags so as not to lose any. Make sure you get a longer bolt than the stock harmonic balancer one to remove it, this way it comes off real easy, if you try and use the stock one to pul on than you take the chance of stripping the threads on hte bolt or in the hole. Also after you take off the timing cover don't install the new opti seal until after the cover is on, then just put a socket on the opti shaft and then slide the new seal on, otherwise you might tear the rubber and it will leak real bad.
Far as cams go you could go slightly bigger without sacrificing any more gas mileage over the hotcam, just talk with a vendor. The hotcam is a good one and as a kit very cheap, so you really can't go wrong with it, if your not comfortable going bigger.
if you've got 373 gears you could go biggeron the cam and not worry about the stall convertor until you get money.
Far as replacing the other parts, i wouldn't replace things that arent broke yet-the lifters aren't very hrd to change-so why put new ones in, they may last you another 50 k. Same with the opti, my waterpump leaked on mine for a good 20k miles befre i changed the pump, and after many thousand more miles hte opti was still fine-still stock one. The timing chain should be replaced by at least a new stock replacement, this item is a pain to change so its up to you weither you want the LT4 one. I went with a stock one since I don't rev past stock rpmI certainly make power above that rpm, but becasue i went stock chain this is what I have to do to make sure it doesn't just slip. Some guys put the stock chain in with the cc306 cam-crazy! The reason i say not to replace everything is because you could crash the car the very next day and then al that money would be done the drain, unless you keep the parts. While your at it, might as well clean and maybe paint the intake manifold.

Re: Should I put in a cam in it?
I also say install a cam. You'll enjoy your car more. Go with a cam that you won't be kicking yourself later for not going bigger. Def replace the lifters while your in there like D James said. I personally would change the springs for peace of mind.
