Post Should I get rid of my Flowmaster?

It rattles pretty bad and its kinda embarrasing. I have heard that Flowmasters are very restictive anyways so I am looking to upgrade. A friend of mine with an 02 T/A just put what he calls a Dynomouth on his car and it sounds sweet. All the Dynomouth is, is a setup like the SLP Loudmouth but with a Dynomax Bullet muffler in the place of the loudmouth resonator. Its would be cheaper for me to do this custom setup so that why Im not just going with the Loudmouth itself. Has anyone done this on an LT1 and if so, how did it sound. I am also weighing my options because it I go to a custom setup, I will lose my cutout(it is custom made and cant be removed and repalced). I just need some help because running around on my rattly exhaust is killing me. Any info would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

You should try to figure out exactly what's ratttling on your catback. I had the same problem a while back and it turned out as the i-pipe goes over the axle it was hitting the heat shield and rattling. It was an easy fix.

I'm looking to replace my Flowmaster also, mainly because of the restriction. I don't want to have to use my cutout anymore, I want to get rid of that also. I've contemplated the Dynomouth also, but then again I'm afraid it might be too loud on my car.

I don't think that you can just say all FlowMasters are restrictive. It depends on which one you have, the size, model etc. I have the Flow' in my Mufflex 4" system, and comparitive tests on the engine and chassis dyno have not shown any restrictions with the system. George Baxter's 97 30th SS convert (3,900#) ran 9.11 with the Flowmaster/Mufflex 4". I have a picture of it blowing a huge cloud of rust out the single outlet (he had his original "2-on-the-left" tips welded on the single 4" outlet) on the launch for the 9.11-second pass......

Fred is right, sorry about that. I'm running the 80 series muffler and it has proven to be a restriction in my application at the track. I just wanted to clarify that.

Well, I know its my muffler because I ran over a piece of tire from a blowout right in front of me and it bent up the muffler pretty good. I think it just knocked a weld loose and now it rattles. I just took my cat off so there is a good bit more flow going through the muffler thus, making it rattle. Anyways, I think I am going to go with the Dynomouth because it is cheap and sounds freakin sweet. I will be sure to let you know how everything turns out. THANKS!!!!

I am thinking about modifying my Loudmouth exhaust, i've heard that replacing the resonator with the bullet muffler quiets it down quite a bit and gets rid of the raspiness. I've had this setup for over a year now, and I'd like something quieter.

I have the same problem as you, a rattling flowmaster cat-back, and its falling/rusting apart. I was planning on going with either a random-tech cat-back or an SLP loudmouth, however I think I'll go the cheap route and get a Borla XR1 muffler and just have 2 tailpipes on the left.

BTW, nice car, I've never seen a yellow Z28 and the SS rims make it look even better

Thanks for the kind words Grease. I have priced everything up and a complete Dynomouth setup is going to run me close to $130. I dont know if I am going to be able to beat that price. Anyways, I think I am also going to put the stock rectangle tips back on as well to give it a sleeper look.

Now, something I just thought of. Could the absence of my cat. converter be causing my exhaust to rattle? The reason I ask this is because the first time it rattled is the first time I drove the car after removing the cat. Just a thought. Anyways, thanks again for the help and kind words.

RedTransAm21, I am buying all the pieces and having my exhaust guy put it together for me. Napa carries the muffler for something like $40. I am not going to be going with a full catback, just my I-pipe and the bullet muffler welded in. Hopefully it goes together as good as my friend's did. I will be going to be putting it together early next week and I will be sure to let you know how it turns out.

Beast96Z-I'm chunkin it!

Thanks

for what it's worth,
i have the Loudmouth on my 93 Z and with stock manifolds and catalytic it sounds absolutely amazing. It is the sound I've always wanted. Its deep and very loud, but mine does not crackle or pop at all. No raspiness. I love it, and its stainless steel which is very nice. I like it better than my old dynomax ultraflow muffler, and better than my friend's borla.

Guys, keep in mind u need backpressure. The bullet does remove the raspiness of the loudmouth, however, it will most likely make it louder. For the guy in Ramona, Oklahoma. I dont know where that is. I live in Norman, Oklahoma. Performance muffler her in Norman is gonna do my whole setup for $115 including piping and muffler. I am putting b&b tips on mine. I am also goin with a random tech cat or carsound cat. I have headers so I will have no backpressure without the cat, which is a bad thing. Flowmaster 80 series is what I have right now. It is restrictive, but sounds good wot, until u get off and the popping begins. Good luck to you. If I can after I get my setup I'll try to put a video of it on here with sound clip. Thanks, Michael
