Shifter Vibration Still There!
Shifter Vibration Still There!
Well i have had a vibration in the shifter and the pedals for a while now. It only happens when i give it gas and its in a gear under load. I thought it was a clutch, pilot bushing or throwout bearing. Well i replaced all of the above and its still there. So now i am thinking its the poly tranny mount feeding the vibes in the car or maybe a u-joint or harmonic balancer. Tell me your guys opinions?
Plenty of people complain about poly mounts and vibes. Ujoint vibes would be most evident under load, but should be present all the time since it always turns. Seems rather unlikely to me that it would be harmonics unless you have messed with it somehow recently

The poly tranny mounts definitely transfers a lot of vibration. I replaced mine with a 1LE mount and like it much better.

I've had a pilot bearing go out too. But you'd notice the sound change when you press in the clutch. It has kind of a grinding sound... but very subtle. Sounds very similar to a throwout bearing going bad.
Well, i think its the harmonic balancer. I pulled it off and drove the car and the vibration is gone! I heard somewhere that the balancer is nuetral balanced so i tried drving without it. Well the vibration is gone. Pretty wierd that the balancer could cause a patial load vibration only at certain RPM's. well i was wondering if it is dangerous to drive my car without the balancer on there? PLease tell me soon because i need to drive it. I will buy a new one this week, just wondering if i will be safe without it for a week. Thanks
I wouldn't even consider driving a car without the vibe damper. From what I understand, the HB is intended to relieve torsional vibration that is induced by all the banging that happens inside the motor. You can rattle your engine to bits without it in fairly short order, or so I've heard.
Well i drove the car for less than 1 minute to jsut try it out, i put the balancer back on and the vibration is back just as bad as ever. So heres the scoop, balncer off-it drives good, balancer on-it vibrates. I think i have found my problem, no where to get a blancer at 7 oclock on a sunday?
Does anyone think it will hurt to drive it for a day or two while its vibrating. Its nto a horrible vibration and a paasenger probably wouldnt even feel it, but it reall vibes the feet and the shifter vibrates hard, do you guys think a new one will solve it or is there still going to be some other things wrong>?
its not visibly broke, is there any way to put the dampner on the wrong way, some of the rubber is exposed on the dampner, maybe a 1/8" or less, not alot, but is this signs of it coming apart?
