A shift kit wont add any hp, it just makes the car shift harder. I have never installed one but I have ridden in a car with one installed and it was pretty cool, if you got the money go for it.

A shift kit is a very worthwhile investment in my opinion.
It makes the car alot more fun to drive and the theory is it will make the trans last longer by not slipping as much.
Second gear scratch simply rules.

Kinda.....

The term "shift kit" was termed by Transgo in the 60's. Originally it wasn't designed to make the trans shift harder, it was to fix the problems with the transmission. Just shifting hard isn't a good thing, there are right and wrong ways to go about it. For example, I had my trans built by a local shop, who I thought I trusted. I wanted the transgo reprogramming kit installed. Well all the guy did was drill the secondary feed hole way out, changed a spring and shimmed up the accumulator. Yeah the thing shifted hard, to hard, and it did it all the time even at part/light throttle. It was crap. When I had the trans out when I was building my 406 I bought a 9.5 convertor for it and was talking to dana at probuilt, I told him how I didn't like the way my trans shifted. Dana had me check a few things and come to find out the transgo kit was never installed. I went to the trans shop the next day and kinda went off. The guy got me a transgo kit the next day and I put it in myself with the help of dana. It took me all day to do. I had never been that indepth into a transmission before. Dana talked me through it on the phone, while he was on vacation, with his wife yelling at him, now thats customer service!!
The kit is awesome. It shifts like a stock trans. the more gas you give it the firmer it shifts. I also installed the vetter servo, .472 boost valve, and a bigger intermediate/reverse valve(for when I manually shift the trans, it shifts alot quicker)
I'd recomend the kit highly.
