Shift Boot Retainer Ring

Does anyone know where I can source a shift boot retainer ring for a Firebird/TransAm? The only place I have found so far is the local Dealership which wants 80+ (No lube applied). I know they are not manufactured anymore and I have tried a few local and Fbody salvage yards hoping they have a few lying around. If one cannot be located does anyone have any ideas on how to ghetto fab one?

EDIT: Does anyone know if the retainer clip from a 98-02 Firebird/TA will fit a 93-97 Firebird/TA? I have found some cars being parted out and need to know in advance. Thank you

Best thing I found was just to keep some of that two-part plastic glue around. I ran into the same thing w/ the dealership, and I couldn't get a salvage yard to sell one to me w/out buying a console too!

Don't know about the TA jobby, but I sure didn't pay anywhere near that much when I bought one for my 97SS M6.

Must be something special.JMHO

You might also check with "Wheelskins." They sell genuine leather boots and just might know of a source, since they are probably asked that question alot.JMHO

My dealership wouldn't let me buy it unless I bought the leather part with it. I think that's where the cost came from.

Thats a good idea. I saw their site earlier doing a google search but noticed that they say you must keep your retaining ring but a quick e-mail might bring something up. What exactly did you buy for your SS and where did you get it? A whole boot and retainer or just the retainer? Maybe If i can find someone parting out their Firebird / TA they will be able to help.

Maybe this is what you're talking about http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...ght=shift+boot

If so, thank Mike94ZLT1. I need a retainer thing too.

Nvetro claims that it is for the LS1 (98-02) cars. The site also doesn't give a good description as to what it really is. It quotes "Transmission Control Lever Boot/Retainer" I am going to try and call them to see which years and what style (Atx/Mtx) transmission it is for. Also, Does anyone know for sure that the clips are similar for 93-97 and 98-02? What about the difference from Camaro to Firebird? I am going to examine some pictures to try and determine wether they are similar but its going to be hard. Thank you though, Ponyackn.

First of all, I ordered a leather shift boot from Wheelskins since my stocker "came" with a small hole (probably when SLP was installing the Hurst) and I think real leather adds a bit of class to an otherwise cheap interior.

As careful as I tried to be, knowing that the ring was easily broken, I broke it anyway.

So I ordered a replacement ring from the Chevy Dealer. Actually never installed it since the broken one is holding up ok.

But the ring did come separately and wasn't expensive.

I can only find the entire shift boot assembly. This is the retainer ring and the boot itself. None of my information nor my local GM dealers have just the retainer ring part numbers.

It would be nice to come up with just the retainer ring part number, but here are the boot and ring part numbers.

Firebird:
93-96 = 17997789
97-02 = 10271369

Camaro:
93-96 = 17997785
97-02 = 10271369

These seem to be the same part, regaurdless as to if you have an M28, M29, MM5(?), MM6.

Also of note; the part number listed in the other thread (linked above #10271371) is listed as a retainer ring for a 97-99 Firebird/Camaro, at least through my local dealer. (It may actually be for a 97-02 as listed though).

Thank you Lower, #17997789 is indeed the retaining ring and shift boot for a 93-97 Firebird.

BUBBA you have mail.
