How much $ for plug and wire install?

Hi fellows-Just ordered the taylors and NGK's from thunder racing, and I was wondering what is a decent price to have them installed. I know a guy who builds engines, so I can avoid crazy mechanic rates, but I was wondering what would be fair to offer...He know all about the LT1, and whata pain it'll be...Any suggestions?

Depends. I know plug access is a HUGE pain with stock manifolds but I don't know what plug access is like with Edelbrock headers. If it's easy to reach the plugs then I'd say 50 bucks and a case of beer.

Heck I'd do it for $50 bucks and a case of beer, even with stock manifolds. It is a serious PITA but nothing outrageous. If your mechanically inclined just save your cash and do it yourself.

just so you know, when my car was under warenty and i had a wire go bad they quoted me at 700 dollars to change all plugs and wires, i though they were kidding, so i went to another shop and it was 750, went to a pontiac dealer and it was 800. Come to find out if you let a shop do it they will rape you, so i took it home, did it with in 5 hours "taking my time" and was done

well if you can't change them yourself then you are looking at around $150-200 for the plug and wire change. If a shop is gonna do it for less then they probably haven't done it on an fbody yet. If that is the case they may end up doing a ****ty job.

Do yourself a favor and set a sat. or sunday aside to do it yourself. I did it with in 7 hours cause one spark plug just happend to break off while trying to take it off. Seriously you should save some cash and just do it your self. Spend time with your car and love it like a woman, remember it never biotches and moans if youve been out all night with the guys

I wish I could do it myself-I'd love to, but problem is I don't gotta lift or any place to jack it up (lousy appt parking lot regs). I'm not worried about my guys camaro expertise-he gotta original Yenko SYC that he's singlehandedly restoring, but I dunno if he'll be able to fit me in before spring break..."amean94TA"-Isn't Behrend quite a hike from state college? Anybody in Altoona, Holidaysburg or Tyrone that wants to make $100? 'preciate it fellows...

Just find some cinder blocks and use your stock jack to get the car up. It will be time consuming but money saving in the long run. It's obvious you don't really want to do it where your at, but you'll save yourself a whole lot of cash if you do.

Try posting in the Northeast F-body forum on this site. You'll have a much better chance of finding someone that can help you out.

Cool

$100.00 seems fair price if you have all the parts, but you just can't have anybody do this, they must have prior experience with this engine.
First, the engine has to be cold(heads).
Second, the wires should be put back into the looms correctly,or at least away from exhaust manifolds, and sleeved with silicone boots(long ones).
But the negative part of the battery has to be removed first, then when all is done, put back.
Use die-electric greese on the boots, and anti sieze greese on the threads of the plugs.Beer time, gotta go now.

Geese, almost forgot, don't over tighten the plugs,as you can strip the threads in the heads,I think 22 lbs. of torque are ok,anybody else?(maybe 16,can't remember)

I am about to do my plugs and wires for the first time and I heard that the best way to do it is to take off the y-pipe.

i would also suggest removing the alternator and getting some anti seize for the threads on the plugs, as well as some di-electric grease to go on the inside of the plug wire boosts.

see if you cant give a local shop a couple of $$ to use their tools and lift. if you asked them, and they could do it, theyd probably not charge you anything because they would respect a guy who wanted to do it himself.
