Setting Valve lash....now or later?

Sup guys.....as you know gonna try and put in my motor for the 3 weekend in a row. Anyway....I was wondering.....should I adjust the valve lash while the motor is on the stand or wait until it goes in. I know its easier now but a lot of people do it while the motor is running.

thanks.

Make a preliminary adjustment now, while it is easy. That way, your engine will have an easier time starting up. Make further adjustments later, if needed.

I agree. Do the primary adjustment while the motor is on the engine stand. If need be if you get any valve train noise after starting the car then you make necessary adjustments.

I got the GM 1.6 rr's which come with the HotCam Kit. It say to tighten 1/2 to 1 full turn after zero lash. Do you guys recommend that? Whats the concensus?

The GM sevice manual recommends bringing number 1 cylnder to to dead center. Then adjust the recomended rockers to zero lash and then 3/4 turn. Rotate the engine 180 degrees and set the remaining rockers to zero lash and 3/4 turn. I have always used this procedure and rev to 7000 at times and have had no problems. I do go back a readjust 3- 4 times a year to just give myself a peice of mind. Just my opinion.

I went 3/4 of a turn past zero lash with mine the first time and it sounded fine when I started it up but the car would barely pull out without stalling, like it had no torque. Maybe I went to far setting zero lash that first time, that may have been the problem. I still don't get how they say up to 1 full turn, that seemed rediculous to me. I havn't heard of anyone setting their RR's that far. I finally set them between 1/4 - 1/2 turn past zero lash and it's been running great. I would definitely adjust them with the motor out of the car, I don't recomend adjusting them with the car running either. Maybe that works for some but it didn't work too well for me.

I set mine at 1/4 to 1/8th of a turn.. 3/4 to 1 full turn is way to far imo. Theres no need for it. And just hurts performance, especially in higher rpms.

I would think an adjustment that loose of 1/4-1/8 might potentually cause a rocker to come loose at higher RPM's. Have seen a rocker back off and drop a valve without breaking a valve spring and put a silver dollar sized hole in a piston. Bad News!!!!! Just asking

yeah my brothers wiggled loose.. he had his on a 1/2 turn. We could hear it before it actually came fully loose.
I guess he'll have to gauge it when he's tightening it too... and stick some PST thread sealer on the threads so oil doesnt get sucked up in the threads and helps loosen them

If you have poly locks, find zero lash then tighten the set screw with your allen wrench. Then turn the nut with your open end wrench to 1/2 turn, if they back off after that something is defective.
