Question Which setting do I put the cloyes double roller crank sprocket on???

I am in the middle of my cam swap right now and I am converting to the cloyes double roller setup. The back of the box says the O position for o.e.m. setting, but the only setting that will work is the square one which says for 2 degrees retarded. Do I use the stock keyway in the crank or do I just install the cloyes to use the square setting since that is the only one that will fit the stock key???

Thanks,
Jeff

Easy, look at your stock gears and compare the two. I believe the proper non retard/advanced selection is simply the square "peg hole" just like stock, but compare the gears by the dots - and then look at the pegs to see which to use, then mark it if you like.

Unhappy

Dr. Mudge, forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by "peg hole"? The hole for the cam dowel? I tried calling summit tech and they were clueless. Each position looks the same whether it be advanced, retarded or normal. Do I just use the stock square key position regardless since that is the only one that will fit?

Thanks again!

As best as I can recall, I am using the square peg - and it would make sense wouldn't it.

Look at the timing mark (dimple) on each gear, put them at 6/12 so that they face each other, and look on the crank gears both and look at the peg-hole locations for both, ensuring again that the timing marks are the same on both timing sets when layed out on your table/bench.

So, as far as the cam gear the only thing you need to look at is the dimple, lay out both timing sets just as if they were on your car, line them up and both and it should be pretty obvious which to use. Make sense?

Use the square mark, and they line up 12 and 12, not 6 and 12.

I have no idea why... but 3 cars so far it's been 12 and 12 with the Cloyes.

I was told that most aftermarket cams have 4 degrees retard ground into them...so if you go with the square which is 4 dregrees retarded for a total iof 8 degrees retard?

Im still trying to figure this out.

The circular mark on the Cloyes crank gear matches the one on the stock gear.

It was my understanding that the square is 4° retarded and the triangle is 4° advanced.

The crank gear should fit on the key in any of those positions.
