SES Message Question

Ok the other day at work I plugged in the OBDII diagnostic tool to check and see if I had any other codes being thrown besides my EGR one because of my headers. I got a new one that I haven't seen yet it was a "Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire code" someone I work with who is pretty knowledgable about cars tells me it's most likely my opti getting ready to go. Tells me to throw it in fifth and step on it to see if the car struggles at all. It doesn't, so what could this code being thrown be for?

Re: SES Message Question

The crank position sensor is seeing irregularities in the crankshaft speed that match the profiles stored in the PCM to indicate misfires. Virtually any item can contribute to this problem.... spark, fuel, mechanical problems, CKP sensor problems, rough roads, etc. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that its the Opti.

Re: SES Message Question

I'm assuming it's the P0300 code. As Injuneer said, don't jump to the conclusion it is the opti. It could be plugs, wires, coil, etc. When it's dark, raise the hood, start the engine and see if there are any obvious misfires.

Re: SES Message Question

yes it is the P0300 code, I believe it came back again today, but it could just be the EGR, I'll check again tommorow at work. And tonight for misfires, which I dont think is it. Any other way to figure this out?

Re: SES Message Question

P0300 is not a code for the EGR. It can become nerve wracking trying to chase the random misfire down. I chased it for a couple of months. Finally the scan tool told me the cylinder, and it was a burned wire. Couldn't see it from the top, and it didn't always miss unless it was raining or high humidity.

Re: SES Message Question

An enhanced OBDII scan tool might pin point the cylinder.

Re: SES Message Question

looks like i might have to take a trip to a dealer or one of the craptacular tuners around here in cent. fl No one I know has one. One other question, I've been told there is an opti-conversion where you can buy a new opti and hook up LS1 style coil packs and you aren't really using the opti except for the signal and the coil packs are supplying the spark! What is this system and where could I find it if it exists? Sorry for the ignorance!
