SES light in 1995 Z28

I've been having a bad problem with misfiring/backfiring/popping and have replaced the opti, opti harness, plugs and O2 sensors. I have a set of OVC wires on their way here and I know for a fact tha tone of the wires is exposed a bit and also has some bad arcing. As for that problem Im guessing the wires should fix it.

I'm also getting a SES light and when it comes, the idle falls to 500 RPM's and the car occasionally dies. Im assuming this problem is separate from my bad backfiring/popping problem. I've attempted to pull some codes from local shops but we keep getting a linkage error because of the connection. Without paying big bucks to pull some codes from a performance shop, has anyone experienced such an SES light?

The shops are having a problem connecting to your PCM because they see the 16-pin OBD-II style ALDL connector, and try to connect using an OBD-II scanner, which obvioulsy won't work with an OBD-I PCM. Tell them to use an OBD-I scanner with the correct adapter plug for the 95.

Bad misfires cause a "false lean" condition. The PCM pours in extra fuel the engine doesn't need. A misfire turns into a whole bank of cylinders running badly. Fix the wire and see what happens. The SES light might be for one bank running lean. But without a scan you're only guessing.
