Question SES CAT Code. Does this sound like a good fix?

I got the P0420 code on my 97 with 83,000 miles. Oddly the light comes on about once a week for about 24 hours and then goes off. I do smell some gas so I think the cat is slowly dying(?) I was thinking of getting the Random Technologies Y pipe which includes 2 cats and having a local shop put it in. This should be cheaper than the dealer route and it should take care of any exaust issues going forward i.e. I won't have to deal with doing the other cat when that one decides to go...

Ok, does that approach make sense? How long do I have to make my decision (Can anything bad happen driving around with a dying cat?) Thanks for any thoughts. steve c
