You could use vise grips but you must be very careful. As for the direction I did mine like 3 years ago and don't remember. I believe it is counter clockwise.

Yeah he's right, it's counter-clockwise. It makes things ALOT easier if you have access to a bench mounted vise. Don't worry, those stock pullies are pretty stout and a vise won't hurt them.

man...i can not get that nut to break on the alternator!!! we cant seem to get a good grip on it either, it just spins and tears up the pulley..i dont know what to do...any more ideas on how to break that loose and get a good grip?

SUCCESS! ha, got it all off, and installed back with the new pulleys working great (so far lol, hopefully nothing goes haywire)...thank you all of your guys who responded, i greatly appreciate that!! again thanks...great forum

Are you using an impact? The only way i was able to break mine free was with an impact.

no...a 2X4, vice grips, a socket wrench, and my massively huge magnificient muscles ...ya those got the job done...cept i completely ruined the old pulley...
