Unhappy serpentine belt: cant get it off

hey im tryin to put on a set of underdrive pulleys and i cant get the serpentine belt to come off! im turning the nut clockwise on the altanator but it just turns, and the belt does not turn with it. It just turns the whole nut, and pulley, but wont loosen (if you know what i am trying to say, its hard to explain, i just cant get it to loosen). Any ideas would help. Also any ideas or tips or how-too's with this whole install would be great...tks guys...

To get the belt off use the belt tensioner. To get the alt. pulley off use an impact.

dont touch the nut on the alternator to get the belt off. put a 13mm(i believe) on the tensioner and turn clockwise. to loosen the belt then slip it off one of the pulleys, then release the tensioner.

ok, tks...and to get the pulley itself off of the alternator use the impact? how do you keep it from turning while trying to loosen it?

Use the impact to get the pulley off. Hold on to the stock pulley tight while using the impact. The nut will come of quick.

Re: serpentine belt: cant get it off

or a 1/2" socket with extension works great, just did this 3 times in past week. use some 'put out' and make sure to push the tensioner as far down as it will possibly go if you need just a little more belt to slip it off alternator.
my engine fans were extremely easy to take out too, just unpluged the fans and slipped it out, then there's much more room once out if you have mid sized - large arms.

Re: serpentine belt: cant get it off

alright...lol, one more question (and thanks guys)...i have bought the crank pulley and the alternator pulley from summit racing as a set. Do i need to jsut take off the old stock crank pulley and completely replace it, or do i do that "sandwhich" thing and keep the stock piece on as well?

The new crank pulley gets sandwiched inbetween the new one and the crank hub. Your going to need a new belt too.

Re: serpentine belt: cant get it off

The new crank does it have one side that has a bit of a collar sticking out of the middle? If so that collar is going to fit tight into the center of your old pulley. The bolt holes should only line up one way. First you need to remove the old pulley from the hub. Let me know what you've done so far.

Re: serpentine belt: cant get it off

I had a very hard time getting the Altonator nut off.
Wou will need to hold the fan very solid for an impact to work. I ended up using vice grips on the fan and bracing the pliers with socket extension agains somthing solid. I then used a breaker bar to get the nut off which was very very tight.

Re: serpentine belt: cant get it off

First remove the belt. Then get someone to help you. Hold the alt. pulley real tight. Have your helper use the impact and the nut will come off no problem. Then your going to need a puller to remove the crank pulley. Before removing the pulley mark it so you know how it came off. Then take the new pulley and the old one. the new one goes on first with the dished side towards the engine. Then the old one goes on facing the same direction it came off. The collar on the new one goes through the old pulley. Make sure all the bolt holes line up and insert the bolts. Tighten the bolts each alittle at a time so the pulleys seat evenly until they are all tight. Then put the new alt. pulley on and tight the bolt with the impact while holding the fan tight so it doesn't spin. Then put on the belt and hopefully the new belt you bought isn't the stock size because the new pulleys require a much smaller belt.

Re: serpentine belt: cant get it off

ok tks...now does the nut go clockwise, or counter clockwise when we try to remove it from the alternator? and can we jsut grip the pulley itself with some vice grips or a pipe wrench?
