Sensor that hooks to water pump? Identify its use

There is a sensor on the lower driverside part of the water pump..
Does this sensor control take the temperature reading, then tells the fans to kick on when the car gets too hot?

That is the sensor that goes to the computer. The one in the head goes to the gauge. I put in a dual unit in the water pump and now my gauge reads what the computer sees and not the fluctuating temps in the head.

The sensor on the water pump is the CTS or coolant temp sensor. It sends its signal to the pcm. The pcm uses this for turning the fans on/off thru the fan relays. The temp gauge gets its signal from the sensor on the left cyl head.
