Security Problem no start! 96 Z

Hi All -
Hope someone out there can help me with a little pesty problem that is starting to occur on my baby. * 1996 z28 * Just started about a week ago. I went out to the car and went to turn it over and NOTHING. Not even a motor or starter crank. First time this had happened in the 2 years of owning this car. After 15 minutes I tried again and it started right up. It happened again a couple days later and I did the samething just gave it time. It worked then today after work I stop to get something and it didn't start .. Here I was in public 1st of all then to top that off it's about 95 out. * all power ect. worked but not the key * I set in the car and watched the security light, it went off after 5 minutes. But before it went off I tried to turn it off but would not turn off even after opening the door when all the ect. turns off or setting the factory alarm on the car. Tried to start it and nothing again but the stupid security light. about the same amount of time to go off and waited a little longer after that just incase that would help out and it did. Now I'm home and looking for help and ways to fix it. It's getting out of hand now. So if anyone can relate or knows how to fix this or what it is I would appreciate any help you can offer me...

Email me ( jcashley@sbcglobal.net ) THANK ALL OF YOU!

Possible solutions

1. Switch to a different key, its possible your chip on your key is going bad, dirty ect.
2. The Key cyl. is fouling out. Its very possible and not a cheap fix.
So first try a different Key if possible and see if that helps or at least clean your key really well. It may not hurt to try and clean out the key cyl as well dust may have built up. Worts case scenario is the cyl. ITs replacable i had mine replaced at a dealer and it cost me 450.00.

Could be one of two things.
1. it could be the chip on the key getting worn or wet.
2. the security module that reads the key is malfunctioning.

my old 3rd gen had the key problem which replacing the key fixed. my 94 Z on the other hand always has the Security light on now. The module must've gone out but luckily the key still starts the car with no problems. I say luckily cause the passkey II system is very expensive to have fixed. Good luck with that.

Yeah the key looks brand new. I think the car had a new iginition installed before I got it at the dealer also. My old 89 camaro had this problem also but would start with securtiy light on this one will not allow anything to turn over... I'm hoping this is not the problem... Any other ideas??

security light

WOW, $450. I am so glad I can do this stuff, cause I couldn't afford it otherwise. The cyl. was about $50 I believe. My sec. light was on also so I changed it and sure enough one of the 2 thin wires that run down the column were damaged. I guess there is only so many times they can flex back and forth until one of them starts to wear. Its really not that hard but you do need some tools and to use care when pulling up the wires you have just enough slack in the column harness. Just get a service manual for your year and follow what it says and don't forget to attach a string or wire to the old wires so you can pull the new wires thru. Its kind of a pain if you aren't good with this stuff you may need to take it to a shop. Ouch! Good Luck! Oh, and don't forget to disable the airbag.
