"Security" Light

I've had an intermittent SES light for some time (going to get it checked out soon) but tonight the "Security" light came on. The SES wasn't on at the time, just the Security. What does that light mean?

Thanks

It's a bad thing, take it seriously. Do a search for this topic & I'm sure you'll find out it's one of the most common probs these cars have. At the very least get yourself some resistors of the correct value so you dont get stranded.

I've had the same problem, the security light is in relation to that resistor on your key. Basically if there's no resistance (i.e. theif popping the column and hot wiring) the security light lights up and the starter wont fire. I just disabled it. No biggie.

Question Re: "Security" Light

Is there a write up on how to disable it because my security light has been on for months now? My car has been having trouble firing up. It's an Mg with a new lt4 starter and a new switch behind the clutch pedal was installed a few months back. Now I need to stand on the brake pedal when I push in the clutch to get the car to fire Is this also a security light issue?

It went off after a few minutes and hasn't been back since. Just to be safe though, how can I disable it?

Thanks for all the help.

Re: "Security" Light

When my lock cylinder was shot, and my car wouldnt start at all, I just bypassed it just as most people on the board have done.

With GM discount at the dealership, the new lock cylinder and 2 new keys woulda cost me about 190 dollars (which I wasn't ready to pay). Plus the aggravation of ripping off the steering wheel to replace it.

And just a tip for when bypassing it, if you can't find a resistor that matches the pellet in your key (once u have the measurement using the method described in Shoebox's link above), just run a strip of them in series until you make up the correct resistance required to match your key. Then, with mine, I just soldered them together, put electrical tape over them, and tapped them into the VATS wire underneath the dash.

Hope this helps
