I had a second rotor on a new Delco opti explode on me in less than 100 miles the other night. This time it was in the middle of Woodward Ave. during the Dream Cruise, that was fun. I'm starting to wonder what kind of interaction problems I might be having with some of my other parts that might be causing this. I'm running an MSD Blaster coil. There seems to be rumors about these things possibly causing opti issues. Has anyone had multiple opti failures with this coil and then gone back to stock? Have there been better results using MSD's cap and rotor? I would just go to a Delteq, but it looks like there might be structural integrity issues with removing the rotor.

 

Cam dowel pin too long? That is often a cause.

MSD Blaster coil and 6A on my car for more than 8 years says these parts don't cause problems.

 

I have had no problems with my opti. Autozone opti with MSD cap and rotor. I've also been running an MSD coil and MSD 6AL for years with no problems.

 

I'll measure the dowel pin tonight. Can I tap the dowel pin back into the cam to decrease its length?

 

I wouldn't tap it back any while its in the motor. Simply take a die grinder and grind it down until its the appropriate length. Die grinders can be had for $30 at your local harbor freight and they are SO useful. You'll thank yourself you bought one...

 

Grind it down. Use rags to prevent debris from going down into the pan.

 

have you been locktighting the rotor screws?

 

I put red loc-tite on mine even if the opti is brand new.

 

No, I have not been using loctite. I'll give that a try this time.

How far into the opti should the cam dowel go?

 

Nevermind. .620-.685 from the face of the cam per Helms.

 

I took some measurements last night. The cam dowel pin protrudes 7 mm into the opti leaving 3mm of clearance. Thoughts? Does it need to be ground down any. I researched previous topics here which revealed that 2/3 of the way in is the max amount. I might be a little bit over that, but I would think that 3mm of clearance is more than enough.

 

We experienced multiple instances of rotor breakage when the Opti vent was either disconnected or not working even when the rotor had been reinforced. Very hot coils seem to increase the effect of ionization on the material used in the rotor. When we pulled them out, the plastic showed signs of decomposition. The problem has not reoccurred since the vent tubing was installed.

I have the vents connected. What a pain in the *** this is just to get spark to the plugs.
