Rusty used cam!!!! Will it cause problems?!
Re: Rusty used cam!!!! Will it cause problems?!
Cam bearings are cheap. But they aren't easy. You will take a big risk running a bad cam. My rebuild right now in machine work is costing 1028.00 (Valve job incl). Not including parts. My motor was in perfect shape when I pulled it. You might save a few dollars with the cam, but the consequences could run in the thousands. Pretty easy decision if you ask me. I am trying to sell a hot cam right now with high miles, but I am going to reconsider it now.

Well thanks guys, I will try and get my $$$ back first, then if worse comes to worse I will try to buff it out myself, then take it to a machine shop for their opinion on running it and then ask if they can fix it if I didnt already
I appreciate it-

I appreciate it-Not trying to 2nd guess you. I would take it to a machine shop before trying to do anything your self. I would want to let them see how good of shape the cam is acually in. It shouldn't cost that much to polish it, if it's salvagable. Hypothetically speaking, if the seller just didn't have a clue and didn't realize he was selling you a shotty cam. He should do the right thing and return the money. I wish you luck.

but for real guys....if it isnt that bad, meaning no pits at all it will not hurt anything, the discoloration and oxidation will not affect it in anyway. it will look new the first time you start it up, however if it has ANY pitting i would not use it either, although no worse than what it looks i honestly believe that it would not effect your bearings at all.

The guy emailed me back saying "its been humid here in OH, it wasnt rusted when I sent it , must have done that in the mail, I will refund your money after you send it back and I need pics first". I just get a pit in my stomach sending it back without my money first....he only has 7 sales on ebay---
Re: Rusty used cam!!!! Will it cause problems?!
I doubt it was anything malicious...when I pulled all my old parts out I made the mistake of wiping some of them clean, not realizing that they need the coat of oil to prevent rust. The guy probably just wiped it down and let it sit in the box, then sent it out once he sold it. I'd take it to a machine shop and see what they say.
Well now he had the ***** to email me and tell me that those werent pics of the cam he sent me , he said " I can tell thats not even the cam I sent you, I am not giving you any refund until I get the cam back to me in the shape I sent it to you in . I have no clue what you did to that cam ".....I was like WTF?!?!? UHHH there is no way I am sending it back to him before I get the money....guess I am stuck with a nice LONG paperweight
