Rusty used cam!!!! Will it cause problems?!
Hey guys, well I just got my used 306cc cam in the mail and it all looked GREAT until I turned it over, then noticed surface rust on ALL the lobes and bearing rollers from it sitting!!!! Some of it looks like it can be wiped off, but some of it looks like it started to pit a little. Will this cam EAT up my cam bearings or will most of it come off after its ran for a little while?! I am sorta bummin' but am not getting worked up yet. Thanks--
Bummer, I f'n hate getting ripped off--- if pics would help let me know and I can post them somewhere and link you to the pics on here---

I know how you feel. Maybe you can get your money back? Look at it this way - it feels bad getting ripped off, but it will feel much worse if you run that cam and it causes a failure.

Have you ever heard of prepaid legal? I don't mean for this to be an advertisement but if stuff like that happens they can be a big help. PM me if you want more info.

Would it hurt to just run mothers polish over it or will that add to my problems?! Here are some pics---

Those pics are of the worst parts, on either end of the cam, then the center still has signs of rust but nothing like that. I wiped off all the RED DUST before taking pics, and that is what is underneath. May have just been VERY LIGHT surface rust, you cant really feel it but in spots it is noticable compared to the smooth side ( its only rusty on the bottom like it laid in water ) and the other 66% of the cam is flawless. What parts would this affect if I ran it, cam bearings and lifter roller tips?! Or does someone actually think if I ran it then that surface stuff will just come off after it wears a little?! Thanks guys---

Thats what I was sorta expecting to hear
I emailed the seller lastnight and today with no response yet. Hopefully he will give me a refund but I somehow doubt it; thats what I get for trying to save a buck
Now I can only hope my used roller rockers are not in the same shape ( different seller luckily )
BTW : CLEAN VETTE!!!! Also your camaro looks REAL close to mine, good job!

Thanks man
Did you buy the cam off Ebay? How did he describe its condition? I'm really curious cuz it pisses me off to see people get ripped off like that. I feel for you man.

worse comes to worse you can easily clean that up. Use some fine steel wool with metal polish, after that get the finest steel wool and do it again with the polish. It will look new.

Thanks Scream. It was described as having 1500 miles on it because it was "too strong for a daily driver", lol. Shoebox thanks for the tip. Saint....I hope to God your right, lol....I will do the worst lobe and see how it comes out and if its good I will feel EXTREMELY lucky and do the rest

Re: Rusty used cam!!!! Will it cause problems?!
Get some Scotch Brite the fine stuff like ya use for washing dishes and some WD and a lot of elbow grease. Finish and shine it with 4"0" steel wool and oil or WD if it ALL doesn't come out on the journals I wouldn't run it The lobes can stand a very small amount left on them.
You can judge or take it to an engine shop and ask their opinion.
