Running Hot in Traffic

I have a 1997 Z28 with the 6 speed.

On the hi-way it runs right at 180 degrees, but in traffic I see as much as 220 on the gauge. Is this normal?

Not uncommon. The secondary fans are programmed to come on at ~227*

Not only that but what you are seeing is only in the head where the gauge sensor is. I put in a dual sensor which sends the temp from the water pump to the gauge and it never goes over about 210-212.

Re: Running Hot in Traffic

Thanks for the info. I feel better about it knowing others run at that temp. Will a 160 degree thermostat help by itself, or do you have to reprogram the fans too?
