Rpm surging... why?

My car idles extremely low... like 600rpms it was drop back and forth from 700-500 when it gets to 500 the car tries to die. It hasnt died yet, but its trying. Not only this but my converter is going back... and on that note should I A. Get a aftermarket converter or B. get a stock converter (free) and drop some 3.23s in replace of my 2.73s

Might as well get an aftermarket converter if you're taking it appart. Also, if you're replacing the gears, go with some 3.42s or 3.73s, otherwise, find a used 3.23 or 3.42 rear. Will be cheaper doing it that way.

An A4 should idle at 550 in drive and 650 in neutral. When was your last tuneup and what has been replaced?

Im either going to buy a whole rear end with 3.23s from someone and he'll give me his stock converter. Or i'll be an aftermarket converter.

Last tune up? lol well i only have 45k miles but I did infact TRY to change my plugs and wires with my stock manifolds... Well it didnt go very well, basically the drivers side has new plugs and wires and the passenger side has stock plugs and wires

I think you should complete that job first, then might want to replace your fuel filter (air filter too if applicable) and if the car feels about the same at higher rpms, it also may be the cat.

Alright well i'll go ahead and change my fuel filter today. possibly even my tranny filter...

But what do you think about my converter problem... Get an aftermarket converter and keep the 2.73s for awhile or get a 3.23 rear end and replace my converter with another stock... Im kinda leaning towards another stock converter, because If i do the converter now a gear install will cost so much more in the long run

Why not buy that used rear AND get an aftermarket converter?

One thing you might consider concerning the gears, I think your going to need a different "carrier" for ANY other gears if you have a 2.73 rear. However with the 3.23 rear you could install 3.73's or 4.10's at a later date. So keep that in mind when thinking about gears.

That's true. Just go with the 3.23 rear and stock stall for now.
