Rounded off oil pan bolt??

This is the stud that the tranny cooler lines are attached too. I have gotten the nut off that holds the tranny cooler line bracket off, but the stud that holds the oil pan on has a rounded off nut. What is the best way to get this out?? It is the last bolt that I need out to drop the pan. Thanks in advance.

To get the stud out you can try to jam two nuts together and then use those to loosen the stud. What i mean by jamming the nuts together is to thread one on and the thread another one on the tighten them together so they lock together then just loosen the stud. I hope that made since and i hope there is enough room to do this. Also you buy a bolt extractors at Home Depot or another store to get it out.

Is it completely round? Did you try a 6 point socket?

Yeah it is completely rounded off...I've tried 6 point sockets....I hate to buy the extractor kit for just this one bolt..unless you can buy them seperate. I may try jamming the two nuts together and see what that does..thanks!!

Well, tried jamming two nuts together and that didn't work....any other ideas? The extraction kit, is it deep well? The stud is just the right length that a regular socket won't fit over it..this really sucks, it is the last bolt that needs to be out for me to drop the pan and change the gasket. I have thought about trying to cut the nut off with a dremel rather than buying a 50 dollar extraction kit...what do you guys think I should do??

If you can,use a small punch or chisel and hit the nut part counterclockwise.Thats what I would do.

Yeah, the only reason I haven't tried that yet is that I have limited space and didn't have a screwdriver or chisel long enough. I am gonna try that tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks for the reply.

I didn't think about that....but I don't have alot of room to get a good hit on it..it is the stud that is right above the K-member, so I am strapped for room right there. I will probably run by Sears today and pick up a set of the extraction sockets and just get it done..thanks for all of the replies and hopefully my next reply will be me saying that I got it out.

Well, went to Sears and bought the Craftsman Bolt out kit..it was only 21.00 so I figured that it was worth it. Got home stuck the bolt out on the stud, made one turn and out it came. Swapped oil pan gaskets and bolted the pan back up. Using a torque wrench with the pan on the car was useless, so I basically just snugged them down pretty good with regular ratchet and socket, is the oil pan very tempromental to torque specs??? Anyway, put some RTV on the front and rear seals before I installed it and kinda sealed them up after the pan was bolted up with RTV. Hopefully I will have no leaks..thanks to everyone for the replies.

Glad to hear you got everything done. Not to sure about the torque specs I did not use any on my pan just snugged them up like you did and so far so good.

Cool...I figured snugging them up would be okay. My buddy was like man changing the oil pan gasket is gonna be hell...but I think that it was very easy to change. So far it is the easiest thing I have done so far on my cam/heads/headers install.

I hope you cleaned all the excess oil off the pan rail on the block with some carb or brake cleaner. If not, its gonna leak

Congrats on getting it fixed
