rough start, fans on, engine light, coolant sensor changed

Hi everyone,

I would like to get your opinion on my problem.

My car just returned from workshop today, for coolant temp sensor (WP) change and new spark plugs (AC Delco).

My problem is : Now, engine take about 2/3 seconds to start, then idle great but with strong gas smell (for 30 seconds) and fans at full speed along with engine light on...

Do you think it may be caused by bad coolant temp sensor model (bought new on Summit, "original" brand),or by a plug wire that wouldn't have been replaced correctly, or any other connector disconnected for spark plug change and left as is ? Maybe O² sensor disconnected ? I just pick up the car few hours ago, and the mechanic wasn't embarassed to left a car that runs more badly than when it arrived !!

I will try tomorrow to find & see if something is wrong, at night with warm engine, no way to touch headers or find something !

My car is a 1997 Z28 camaro A4 stock.

THank you very much. Sorry for my english, I'm french.

Put an OBD-II scanner on it and find out what turned on the SES light. Was the SES light on before you took it to the shop?

Hi,

I have currently OBD1 PCM from PCMforless, but I can plug my original OBD2 PCM to get information with my scan tool (OBD2 only).
Will try that tomorrow and give information here. I didn't have any SES light before car went to shop.

Thanks,

Robin

You really need to tell people up front when you have a major mod like an OBD-I conversion. Why not use a "signature" with the basic info about your car, including the mods. Plugging in the OBD-II PCM will not tell you what code is stored in the OBD-I PCM you removed. In fact, by unplugging the OBD-I PCM you will lose the stored codes.

Hi Guys,

It's OK now. The problem was bad connection from coolant temp sensor connector to the sensor. Tightened the connector contacts with a knife and it's perfect !

Nevertheless, I will order new Coolant temps sensor pigtail from EFI connection to avoid further problems.

If it can help.
