Rough idle in my 95 z28

This isn't really new but it's been bugging me. Every now and then when I first start the car, it idles rough. Not to the point where it would stall out but definately not right. But as soon as I give it a little gas, it goes away and runs fine. Also it seems to do it more when it's been running for a while and I shut it off and let it sit for a few minutes, then start it again. It also rarely does it when it's cold but much more often when its warm. I went to wal-mart today and let it sit for about 20 minutes and while I was putting groceries in it, I started it to get the a/c going since it was a hot day and me and my girlfriend were watching the front seats shake violently from the idle being so rough. She thought it was going to blow up. But as soon as I gave it gas, it ran fine and the rough idle was gone. I also currently live in FL and its starting to get into the 90's so could the heat be affecting it? I doubt it's got anything to do with the opti since I just replaced it about a month ago and it also did the same thing before I installed the new opti. Any ideas?

mine does something similar, but it is when all the temps are rigth and the car is put into warm idle, my car is set to idle at 550 rpm's when warm and only does it then...

I think if I up the idle a little it should be fine...

What is your idle set to?

Normally it seems to idle somewhere between 650-750. When it idles poor, it drops to around 500 and the whole car shakes like hell. It only seems to do it when it first starts up. After that, it runs fine. So far It's never happened while I was driving it or stopped at a light or in traffic or anything like that. Only at start up.

that is a really low idle. I dont think my car ever idles below 700-750... get the idle bumped up. Any car idling at 500 is gonna be rough, its practically dying.

Just a thought that would be worth a try. Take off your IAC off of your throttle body and spray some WD-40 or some type of lube on it. It may be on its way out or just haning up causing you to have a rough idle. It is a fairly common problem, just something simple to try.

Thanks i'll give it a shot. Also is it possible it could be something with the icm? I remember reading somewhere that it has a tendancy to get heat soaked because of it's location and cause the car to run rough. Anyone ever heard of this problem?

Re: Rough idle in my 95 z28

The ICM can become heat soaked. You can install a couple of spacers between it and the head if you think it may help. I don't think that is your problem at all though. Plus, some say that when you space it out it looses it's ability to transfer and disapate the heat. I personally don't see this and have mine spaced out with no issues here. I don't think your problem is the ICM because if that was the cas it wouldn't go back to a normal idlel just by reving it a little. It really seems that your IAC isn't moving or is sticking to me and when you move the throttle you are cracking your Throttle body and moving your IAC past it's sticking point. Give the IAC a good cleaning with the WD 40 and see if that fixes it. If that makes it a little better but it still has its spells, they arn't much at autozone. I think around $40. Good luck

Re: Rough idle in my 95 z28

I finally got a chance to clean out the iac today and it worked. My girlfriend drove the car earlier in the week and she told me the car started to idle like crap again and as soon as she turned the a/c off, it idled fine which also points to the iac. So once again it's running great. Thanks for the help.

I bought this car and it does the same thing at least once a week. It will idle rough as hell, but with some gas it will clear up. Sometimes it will clear up by itself by idling faster, but most of the time I have to give it gas. Thoughts?
