Rough Idle... misfire?
Rough Idle... misfire?
Hello, my car has not been running that great recently. The service engine light went on about a week ago and since then I have changed the oil, spark plugs, damaged hoses, and the battery. The light still persists. The engine is now running rough at idle. It shakes and the charge goes down, lower than 13 sometimes. I took it into the mechanic and he said the code is related to a misfire and he thinks it might be the spark plug wires or the opti spark. It sounds really espensive just to examine it, about $1200 just to diagnose (to examine the wires and remove the opti spark). Because of the high price tag I was hoping to get recommendations or experiences from other f-body owners. Also, does the price sound fair? Seems very steep to me. Thank you!
Re: Rough Idle... misfire?
LoL how much money??? Thats insane man. Ive done like 3 optis myself and you can do yours yourself if that is your problem. You should pull the wires individually from they spark plugs while its running and see which one is getting spark. If all of em are getting spark then check the spark plugs themselves. If all of that checks out good then think about replacing the opti, but dont pay anyone to do it. You can replace it with simple tools and some time.
Re: Rough Idle... misfire?
I had my 94Z diagnosed at a chevy dealership for $98.00. I dont know what kinda crack your Mech is smokin but i definitely wouldnt pay that kinda money just to find out if it was an opti or a wire. take it somewhere else and get a second opinion.

Before spending any more money on the 'parts replacement' approach, get the PCM scanned, get the EXACT code (or codes) and come back and post them. Without knowing the codes you're just pissing good money after bad.
When you post the codes, add a 'signature' so that we at least know the year of the car, model, tranny type, and any major mods. Not all LT1's are the same, and by not including basic info about the car, you're making it harder for people to help you.
