Rough idle, high iac counts, rich, hesitation

I have had a problem for quite a while now. The car has a rough idle (when coming to a stop the car will idle under 500 rpm before coming to normal idle. It pukes black smoke under wot and will hesitate. If i'm sitting still and hold the throttle at 3k rpm....it will stay there for about a second then drop the engine rpm 500 or 600 rpm to around 2600 rpm and then up to about 3100 or 3200...and back down and repeat the process. Any ideas guys? The car also surges badly. I have pcmforless tuning. The car has the hotcam and it doesn't have the defined "cam sound" like it used to ....and like all other cars do also. I've replaced the ignition module, o2's, plug and wires of course....even replaced the dreaded opti. Any remotely possible solutions would be welcomed with open arms.

Thanx
Joe

How are you controlling fuel for the S/C?

You could try setting the valves again.

Check your MAF sensor. Swap it with a friend and see if it goes away. I had a similar problem and it was a bad MAF. Steven

Have you had the car scanned? Are there any codes? If there are no codes, you could try reading some of the data. Sometimes stuff can be wrong with these cars, and you may not get a code or SES light. You may have to look closely at the readings, and or break out a voltmeter and start checking sensors and connections.

I do have datamaster and the only codes I have a related to the a4 to m6 swap. From what people have told me to look for the map sensor seems to be good....i'm new to reading all the info though and can't make total sense out of all the readings. I am reading up on the scanmaster article that Fred has on his site and attempting to finally make a halfway intelligent attempt at troubleshooting this 2 year long fight. I'm tired of not getting anywhere near the full potential of my car. I hate dredding the surging and hesitation....not to mention not wanting to race at the track or on the street due to the massive cloud of black smoke at times.

Thanx
Joe

I was looking at one of my old WOT runs before getting my blower and my maf showed over 300 a couple times! One time was 371 gm/s. That sound odd to you? I had boltons with the hotcam at the time.

Yeah as some have just said...I am almost positive it is the MAF. Mine was doing the same thing until today. Take the ends off and see if there is crap on it. Mine was almost black. Be really careful and clean it up and you should be back to the norm.

What exactly did you use to clean it? Alchohol with cotton swab or what? What part of the element do you clean also.

Thanx

i used "general purpose cleaner".... there are the metal "rods" and then the lil tiny/fragile things...i avoided the fragile things and cleaned up the rods as best as i could. It took no longer than 15 mins to pull it out, clean it, and get it back in and the car ran perfectly. Consider yourself lucky! I just paid 90 dollars to find out what you just found out for free!!
