rocker adjustment

i'm adjusting my rockers and most of the cylinders are working fine but cylinder 4,6,7 will not adjust properly. it seems even a 1/4 turn is too much and it doesn't seem like the lifter plunger is taking up any slack. (feels like i'm tightening a solid lifter) the lifters are new with maybe 500 miles on them. rockers are crane gold. any ideas??

Re: rocker adjustment

I'm assuming that you're adjusting the lifters while on the cam's base circle? Which procedure are you using?
Are you able to find zero lash no problem?
Are you adjusting with the engine running or no?

Just trying to understand exactly what's going on here so bare with me.

Re: rocker adjustment

i am going in firing order. i'm not having trouble finding zero lash but on a few of the cylinders there is much more resistance when turning the nut past zero lash. i got them all lashed but not sure if there right because I started the car and they are really loud.
i don't have any friends with rr's so i'm not sure exaclty how loud they are supposed to sound.

Re: rocker adjustment

What do you call zero lash and how are you finding it? I ask because there is some bad info out there about this and it has come up recently on other forums.

Re: rocker adjustment

You'll find that most who try to adjust the rockers with the engine not running eventually resort to doing it with the engine running...I can assure you it's much much easier...Especially if starting with new lifters.

Re: rocker adjustment

i set zero lash by shaking the push rod up and down with my fingers and tightening the nut with my other fingers as soon as it tops moving up and down.

what is the procedure for adjusting with the car running? wouldn't it shoot oil everywhere?

thanks

Re: rocker adjustment

Do it with the engine running. Zero lash is easy to find this way. Just tighten until you can barely tighten by hand, but dont keep tightening. You will feel it. Then set the preload of about 1/4 turn.

MUCH easier to set this way.

Consider yourself lucky that you dont have Comp-R lifters as they are about 10x harder to set.

Re: rocker adjustment

Running/not running, it's just a matter of personal preference. One is not better than the other. Easier/not easier is by preference as well. I have used the not running method for years without an issue (probably because I used to often set solid lifter lash and you don't do that with it running).
