Roasting the tires?
I think it depends on the clutch and the tires. If you have a good clutch and pressure plate and stock tires, the motor and clutch can overpower the tires pretty easily, and once they're spinning the only thing seeing much stress will be the tires. On the other hand with wider/stickier tires there will be more stress on the rear when you engage the clutch, and with a weaker pressure plate the clutch will be more likely to slip. So if you want wheelspin, get a good clutch and non z rated 245s and light 'em up!

You are going to do at least some damage to the clutch if you want some smoke, unless you let the clutch out all the way and just nail it. Even then if you have enough power the clutch may slip even though it is fully engaged.

I ran a stock clutch on my 1996SS for nearly 70k miles. About 55k of those miles the car had 350 to 399 rwhp, several drag strip runs, and several dyno runs. Clutch finally smoked at the track one day and, to tell ya the truth, I've had more problems with high performance aftermarket clutches than I had with the stocker. Had I known, I would have just put a stocker back on

My stock clutch will sit and roast using linelock on street tires with some decent tread on them. That is just easing into the throttle/clutch as well, not a huge clutch dump like justens wants to do.

Just my opinion

BTW, did you every dyno the car with the supercharger? It's probably on your website, but I'm being lazy at the moment.

Nope, never dyno'd the car. Never really tuned the car either. For the last like 5 years I've been planning on a 383 so haven't spent any effort to try and make the car faster. I've had the 383 for a couple three years now too
I'm really going to make an attempt this summer to get the car together though and running with the 383. Wish me luck that I can get off my **** and get this project at least started. LOL!
I entered my stock 94 in a burn out contest and did 2 1-2 minute burn outs in second gear and never had a cluch slippage problem that I could smell. I don't imagine the tires I had were very sticky though.
If your so worried about dumping the clutch, couldnt you always try this? ... Let the clutch out all the way, with the car basically idling, then floor it with one foot, and LIGHTLY put on the brakes with the other. It'll spin them as long as you want, but if you do that too long, you'll kill the brakes without a line lock.
I had pretty sticky tires, so much so that I could barely get any wheel going into 2nd even with my mods. I could drop the stock clutch at any RPM and it would lock and get the tires smoking right away. IMO if your stock clutch is roasting before your street tires your clutch is on its way out already.
I now have no trouble getting sideways going into second with my new tires...

didnt break the little 10-bolt, but i did twist over the wheel studs, did it with slicks on the back at the track, rev limiter lunch(woohoo) it made for a nice picture that was for sure.

Ok, so I see that the three days I spent tuning the car was a waste of my time

The Yellow Beast is the 96. He is talking about the 94. Now what were you saying about being old and your memory?
I should probably argue with you in email.
