Is this the right spot for a tranny question?
Hey guys im a new member. I just purchased a very nice 1995 TA 86k miles, and is my second LTI, and I LOVE IT. The car has no rattles, everything nice and tight and not even the slightest hesitation. Dead on idle with AC on in drive 500 rpm with the brakes holding, tach doesnt even twitch. The only problem I have noticed is that when shifting from park, or neutral to drive, I get an ugly little kick that I know cant be good for anything. A4 obviously. I need to get the car up tomorrow and see where a small tranny leak is coming from also. The fluid level is right on and it does not bang going into rerverse. All other shifts seem fine, The idle is low, 500 rpm going into park. I was thinking U joint, which it may need anyway, but the fact its not doing it going into reverse makes me think its something else. Any input would be appreciated, I did search but never found a thread where it didnt bang into reverse, only drive...BTW the car is bone stock...thanks guys

Might spend $80.00 or so and have the car checked out.Might need a tune up.More folks should chime in,but that's what I would do.Congrats on the new car.My02.

500 rpms is kinda low especially with the air on.Now are you getting a clink sound,or a clunk sound? If your car is stock, your u-joints may not be the issue.Clink sound might be the tranny, clunk sound is normal.I would have all the fluids changed(including the rear end and put the GM additive in there)

Thanks man. It is more of like a .5 second delay when going from park to drive, then when it goes into gear it jolts the car...really no bad sounds to speak of, just a rather harsh jolt. Also goes into reverse just fine... I should just get it scanned and start there.
Re: Is this the right spot for a tranny question?
The stock programming for the automatics is 550 RPM in gear and 650 RPM in neutral. The stock tach is not very reliable, but usually reads 100-200 RPM higher than actual RPM. You get more reliable results be reading the RPM directly from the computer with a scanner. Having the A/C on should not affect the idle speed at all. The IAC controls it to the programmed RPM, bumping up counts to adjust for the added load of the A/C.
To answer your first question, the transmission and drivetrain would be covered on the "Drivetrain" forum. There is a supporting vendor (Performabuilt) who has a trans shop, and he's really good with advice, but he's not online often.
Since you're new, let's see where this goes, before moving it to the Drivetrain forum.

Re: Is this the right spot for a tranny question?
Hey guys thanks for your input... I got under the car today and it seems like my tranny fluid leak was just a few loose bolts on the pan...I also seem to have some play in the U joint, so doesnt look like to big of a deal...Thanks for the advise and will reply if that solves it..
