Richmond whine. 2.73's to 3.73's problem

Has anyone put Richmond gears in and not whined? I have read it's hard to get Richmond to not whine because on the cut. I have 2.73’s and I am putting in 3.73’s. So I have a 2 series carrier. My mechanic says the only ones that make 3.73’s on a 2 series is Richmond and GM. The Richmond is ~ $200 the GM are ~ $900. We are having big trouble getting the gears to not whine on deceleration.
My big question is how much would a matched set Moser set be? Do I NEED a different carrier or a ring gear spacer to put the Moser on? I would think the Moser’s with a new carrier would be more that 200 but less than 900 and not whine. I have read on here that people have used Moser and NOT whined.

I am trying to decide if I should send the Richmond back and get everything I need for the Moser’s.

For those who have gone from a 2.73 to 3.73 what have you done to make it work, and does it whine?

THANKS!

Strange also makes a 3.73 for a 2 series carrier. $225

They wine a little on acceleration, only because I didn't get the pinion depth perfect when I installed them.

Its all in the pinion depth. Me and Sweetred95ta installed his 3.73s and they are just about perfect.

Re: Richmond whine. 2.73's to 3.73's problem

I went from 2.73's to Richmond 3.73's and mine do whine. They were really bad at first, so I reshimmed them and that helped a lot. They still whine up until about 3,000 RPMs. I read all the same things you probably did saying how hard it is to not get them to whine. I was also told the same thing by one of the best car building/rear end places in Jersey. Just put on a set of long tube headers and you won't hear it anymore, I don't.

I got Richmond 3.73's ....went from the 3.42's....no whine at all, but unless you really know what you're doing, get an expert to put em in. it's worth the $$$. I wouldn't attept it myself and I'm not bad with the wrench.

$299 for gears, install kit and pinion bearing...estimating $250 for the install. i had it done at same time i had plugs, stat, hooker shorties, plug wires and hi-flo cat done and total labor for all was $950. shouldn't be more than $600 for the parts and install...F-Body Motosports in Charlotte did mine. Find a shop that specializes in the F-Bodies and u should be fine.

i did the stat, cat back, plugs myself.

so the gears will cost about 299 + about 300 for installation? where can you get it done if i can't find a shop that specializes in f bodies?

maybe i'll get them put in when i get LT headers and a y pipe.
