reverse cooling?
Bearings missing == bum water pump (In the eyes of the engineers who designed it), the cam driven water pump decision was made because it was supposed to put less load on the water pump bearings. the seal being shot is evidence of poorly maintained cooling system although once again if its a bum water pump the seal can go prematurely, 65,000 miles is a lot of miles for a water pump, but they were supposed to last more than 100k...
Yes, the bearing failed because it was a bum water pump, they are supposed to last 100k+ miles and when they don't unless its related to poor maintenance I regard it as a bum water pump.
Probably not much value in saying this, but the factory pump in my '97 is still going strong at almost 130k...I've learned that part failures in these cars are tough to predict. If you talk to enough folks you'll find that it's like anything else - some last forever, some don't.
Hell, my stock Opti is still doing great....according to most people on here half the parts on my car should've died a long time ago.
Just the luck of the draw I guess...when I think about though, it's kinda funny - if GM's failure data shows say a 10% failure rate for WPs, Optis, etc., I bet most of that 10% has posted about it on an internet forum somewhere
