Reused old head bolts

Reused old head bolts

When I put on the AFR heads I brought I was short for cash so I reused my old head bolts am I screwed????

???

Arp says their bolts can be reused.

I know it's strongly advised against as the bolts are only designed to be used once but I don't think it's a definite that they'll let go. I would probably get some good bolts before long though.

I think it depends on the year whether the bolts are torque to yeid or not.

Most head gasket sets come with the bolts though I think

Yes they are the stock bolts too

I would get a set of bolts and new gaskets asap either way.

I mean if I go and replace these things do I have to remove the intake again? It's already bolted down, cant I just remove the bolts and replace them???

$^#%@&$&!!!!! I have to take the valve train apart again!!!

The head gaskets are already new do I have to replace those again too?

If the heads have been torqued down yes. (unless they are copper gaskets)

welp looks like I'll be sticking with what I got no one in hell I'm taking this thing all the way apart again.

Aye. This is not to bash WM or anyone else, because I always ave a dime or two here an there, but this is what happens when you flat out cut corners.

How the hell do you get a set of afr heads and not be able to afford $50 head bolts, let alone not know you need them.


So you are going to risk a set of afr heads to save a days work and another $100?

Ive heard of people using the stock bolts and running just fine. Its not as bad as people make it to be. Also depends on the year i think 93 and 94 had regular re-usable bolts, not torque to yield. As long as you torqued them good they will probably be fine. Worst case the headgasket blows out again and you have to replace it. I can't see it ruining your heads.

I know of several people reusing stock bolts with no issues. You are also correct on the 93 and 94 bolts. As far ar the gaskets go, if you haven't run the motor, you won't need to get new head gaskets.

All it takes is one bolt to snap off in the block to ruin your day. I've seen some recent threads with just that happening. It's too easy to use good bolts and do it right.
