Resurface Alum LT1 heads everytime they're removed?

I've been told several times by machine shops to resurface aluminum heads when ever you remove them do to they will not be level, any truth to this?

Im just your average home garage mechanic with limited experience with aluminum heads, but I have never heard this from anyone either in person or online, and I've been on this board for quite some time now. Also, last spring I took my heads off to fix a gasket that was slowly leaking, I just cleaned the surfaces, slapped on the new gaskets and bolted them back down. Haven't had any problems since.

My machine shop also mentioned this, so I had my heads surfaced. It only takes off maybe .010" or so, so it's worth it to ensure a good seal.

If I had resurfaced mine everytime, I wouldn't have a head left . . .

Not unless the car was overheated. Then they need to be checked for warping. Like Engineer Mike said, you would end up with nothing left. You would also eventually cause problems with intake fitment and valve train geometry.

If it is the first time taking the heads off the car then you should.I took mine off last summer for the first time and took them in to get checked. They were warped .008" so the shop took off .010".Now the next time I take them off I will have them checked at least. If you are series about your motor then I would recommend it.

the original owner of 95 had to replace a leaking head gasket. he took it to the local factory shop and they also recommended having the head shaved. this was the first time the head was pulled.

IF your heads have not been overheated they should be fine. Just use good gaskets (FELPRO) when you slap them back on. I slapped my heads back on after my rebuild and they have been fine.
