Replacing water pump gear... how?

I got the old one out, and now I am to replacing the new one... I just am not sure how to press it in there... any ideas?
I am referring to the water pump impeller shaft gear that sits above the cam gear on the timing set and is run by the timing set...

thanks again!

Re: Replacing water pump gear... how?

I replaced it w/ the stock LT1 replacement from GM and this is the thread where I explained why I need to....

and here are the 3 pic's of my stock one that had 75k miles on it... I would suggest replacing it in hindsight now when you replace your timing set... but this is why...

the teeth on the stock LT1 timing set are perfect... not even a touched edge.. but the water pump teeth however....
thanks for any advice on how to put a new one in there... I popped the stock one out using a 3/8" extension and a hammer and it popped out w/ 1 semihard hit.

thanks again

I would agree that the gear should be replaced. I gave up trying to replace the gear on that shaft assemby. Most shop manuals for the LT1 state that the assembly is a wear item. I purchased a completely new assemby with the gear on it. It wasn' t that expensive and I didn't want to lose a day or more having the engine apart as I tried to find a machine shop to press fit it on.

Maybe there is an easy way to get it on but I didn't figure it out.

Re: Replacing water pump gear... how?

yah, I have a replacement gear set... w/ the impeller shaft and all ready. I just now need to find a way to get it far in enough so I can use the torx bolts to push it the rest of the way in... I don't want to use a hammer on the shaft but if I have to that might be my only option... any suggestions?

put a piece of wood over the shaft and hit the board with a hammer.
