Replacing the oil pump and pan gasket

What is involve in replacing the oil pump and pan gasket with the engine still inside the car? Do you have to unbolt the engine mounts? If so, how hard is this?

Also, how much clearance is there between the oil pan and the k member?

Yes you have to undo the engine mount bolts. You also have to jack up the motor to clear the K-member. How to do this I am not sure b/c I need to drop my pan and put on a new gasket. Matt

I just replaced my oil pan gasket 2 weeks ago. I received the car back after a cam install and the pan gasket was ripped on driver front corner. The guy used RTV to seal it and it held for less than 200 miles. I ended up just removing all of the pan bolts which allowed the pan to drop about an 1 1/2". I then ran the front of the pan gasket underneath the crank, with the driver and passanger sides of the gasketunderneath the pan. Once the front and back (half circle parts) are in place and are not firm, you can then wrap the driver and passanger side around the edge of the pan without harm. Then I just put a little RTV on the front and back of the pan gasket for extra insurance and have absolutely no leaks what so ever. It took me a totol of about an hour. Good luck.

Rodrigues, the above is just a copy of what I posted in your previous post. It is more for SS97. Concerning your questions about having access to the oil pump, you will need to remove the oil pan. This requires removing the motor mounts and jacking the engine up.

Ah well, I guess I will just assemble the engine and when its done replace the pan gasket. If my oil pressure gets really bad I will replace the oil pump. Thanks all.

How low is your pressure? At idle and at different RPM's?
