Replaced valve stem seals - still smoke?
UPDATE #2 : Ok guys I tested today at WOT and it doesnt smoke at all on the intial punch or anything. Just when the engine reaches normal operating temps, your turn it off and come back within 10-30 minutes (if engine has sat long enough to cool off then itll start fine. But if its still hot like above 160 degrees then you will get a puff on startup. HELP ME!
Okay I spent a week raplcing valve stem seals w/ new felpro ones (I slid them over the seal and used a 1/2" rathchet to tap them down utnil they were flush w/ the guide) I also put new LT4 springs, LT4 retainers, and LT4 locks as well as 1.6 GMPP rockers. I finally get the car done and turn it on ...no smoke from pipes...drive it to gas station 3-5 miles away and fill her up, turn her on...no smoke...Drive it around maby another 5-10 miles and she gets upto around 200 on the temp(normal high) and take her home and wash her w/ soap and I also cleaned the tail pipes...possibly got some water inside. I then turn her on and ...it was dark but Im pretyt sure there was a nice puff of smoke...I then let her sit for like 15-20 minutes more and turn her on...no smoke..then 10 minutes later turn her on...no smoke. I dont understand why it would smoke that one time. Do valve stem seals need to be broken in or what?...I didnt try it at WOT yet to see if it would smoke on the initial punch(I would get a small puff right when I punched it but not a continous stream) ...Does it seems like I have bad ring? Seals not broken in? My car also has a small oil seapage I noticed by the balancer..not sure where its coming from but its nothing major but would a bad intake gasket cause smoke like this?

Re: Replaced valve stem seals - still smoke?
maybe you got a lot of water in there i dunno. If it doesn't smoke now, i wouldnt worry about it. Oh and when installing the seals you should use some vasiline, makes em slide right on.

Make sure you are postive that they smoke... doesn't sound like you are positive it smokes now. I'm sure the motor has a ton of miles on it and if it only smokes this much I wouldn't worry about it.... hell i've seen 2000 Audis smoke on startup with 60,000 miles of babing them on the clock.

I wouldn't worry about it because we have a 85 chevy pu with a 305 and 180,000 miles that smokes alot of blue smoke at all times except idle...just have to ad a quart of oil once a month or more if we drive it alot.
Just check your oil and make sure it doesn't use alot and that is a good indicator. You dont have a serious problem unless it uses quite a bit of oil.

For like half of them I was just oiling the valve stem then for the other half (when I discovered the plastic sleeve) I used it. But honestly I cant see why not using it would cause that much fo a difference to create such a puff of smoke, and besides I thought valve stem seals only leaked on cold start not hot?

The only thing I can think of is this oil sepage around the timing chain/bottom of engine. Cant really tell where coming from. But its nothing major, like it doesnt leave marks on the driveway.

And the extra smoke when you start it up after awhile could just be extra gas setting in the cylinders...dont quote me but it could be. If you really want to be sure, then do a compression check but i wouldn't worry about a little smoke.
