Is removing water pump driveshaft necessary for the horsepower?

Is it necessary to remove the water pump driveshaft in order to get the extra horsepower that I am trying to get with the electric water pump? Or can I just let it spin freely?

What's the point in still having it there? Just remove it and plug the hole up. If you leave it there it is still "rotating mass" essentially.

The point would be not having to do the extra work to remove it.

Leave it there, you've taken the mechanical energy needed to pump the water out of the equation, thats where the ~5 rwhp comes from. Removing the shaft isn't gonna affect much.

The best option is to remove it, then you don't ever have to worry about an oil leak or the gears and bearing going bad.

I plugged the shaft hole with a NPT Allen socket plug.

And just in case you want to sell the car you can just put a stock waterpump on without having to tear down the timing cover again.
