If you are not pulling the timing cover you will have to pry the old one out. Then you will have to put the new one in, it's not impossible to do this but installing the new seal while on the car is difficult. I have done it once before. If you decide to pull the timing cover you will have some difficulties of pulling the timing cover due to the pan gasket. If the pan gasket have never been replaced chances are its has some RTV on it, especially on the corners. You can stand a risk of tearing the rubber gasket. I would try first to install it on the car then if worst comes to worst pull the timing cover.
Good Luck,

Thanks for the reply, I can't seem to get a good enough grip to pull out the old seal and now it's in pretty bad shape... I got a tool from harbor frieght and it broke pretty easily, any other suggestions I'm really not up for the challenge of pulling the timing cover if that's what is needed and now the seal is toast...

What kind of seal puller are you using? I used this tool and it was a breeze (had the cover off, but same principal):

Then just use a seal installer:

You might not have enough room though, because you have to line that seal up just right and give it some good whacks. I really recommend pulling the cover. But if you do, replace all 3 seals on there. You will need to drop the oil pan about an inch in front to remove it so you don't tear the pan gasket.

Thanks for the comments, I was able to remove the old seal with the tool you showed from amazon, but then I couldn't get the new seal back in... finally I used old scrap 2 X 6 that was about 8 inches in length and placed it on top of the hub and gave it about 3 good solid hits (radiator still on car btw) and was able to get the seal on, so now I'm a bit futher... thanks again
