Removing the Underdrive pulley from stock crank/balancer
Well I didn't know this, with my Under Drive pulley is attatched to the stock crank pully, its just that the crank pulley and harmonic balancer are one piece. Of the LT1s I have worked on underneath, all have had UD pulles and I wondered why the Harmonic balancer has gooves for a serp belt..... lol
So anyways, I really want to go back to stock, but how the heck do you get this UD pulley off of the crank?? Has anyone done this??
I am just dreaming of the days when I put my key in, turn the ignition on, but keep the engine off and see almost 14 volts!!
This morning I turned my radio on while I washed the car, and its just a radio and speakers, nothing else. I turn the key into the down position just for the radio, it was on for about 30 minutes while I detailed the car. The I went to start her up, I get a half crank then click, click, then DEAD! No lights or ANYTHING..... My battery got drained. So I jumped it with my Hyundai and after she recharged, the car was fine.
So long story short, im replacing the Alternator, putting the stock crank back into place and a stock serp belt.
One last question if anyone can answer. With the stock crank and UD crank pully it looks like it used longer bolts. Should I put in stock length bolts, or get ARP ones?? OR are the ones on the stock/ud set up the ones I still use with the stock crank only??

Re: Removing the Underdrive pulley from stock crank/balancer
Have you considered just buying good battery? Just jumping a car won't charge a battery. Just driving around won't recharge a dead battery or a weak battery. In most cases UD are not the problem---lousy batteries are. JMHO
Re: Removing the Underdrive pulley from stock crank/balancer
no, the battery is fine, its that im only charging at 12.7 volts with the motor running, confirmed through datamaster. The battery can only take what the alt is putting out. If it is not spinning quick enough, then the battery cant take it. The battery is a year old and has been the best battery I have ever had.
My alt makes noise with i take the belt off and I spin by hand, not much but I get a sqeek so im replacing it as a precautionary reason. But regardless I want that Alt spining at the proper rpm to ensure a fully charged battery.
I mean I get the best battery ever, but after I start using it, i can only recharge what the alternator will put out, get what I mean??

Re: Removing the Underdrive pulley from stock crank/balancer
I have the March 2-pully UDs on my 97SS along with an Ultima red top battery and I have never (knock on wood) had any problems. It has been much debated about whether UDs are worth it, however, since I have yet to experience any problems, and theorhetically I am reducing the drag on the engine with the UDs and increasing my throttle response off idle (at least it seems that way) I have no intention of deleting my UDs.
I guess it's just a matter of opinon.

Use a three jaw puller.

I have removed the pulley before, thats not the issue, the issue was how to seperate it. Now anyone have different length bolts for the crank pulley to the hub??
As for the charging, I think I may have pin pointed a problem, possibly a alternator. So I am going to replace that, and see if the output improves, if it doesn't or maybe minimal, then the UD pulley is definitly coming off.
Thanks for all the input, its always Appreciated
Aaron
Re: Removing the Underdrive pulley from stock crank/balancer
I just bought a set of underdrive pulleys and it says to but the ud between the stock pulley and the hub... Do I have to put the stock pulley back on or will i be ok with just the ud on?
