removing lt1 heads

How hard of a job is this, how many hours. What else should I change while they are out? Are there any good sites out there that shows how to do it? I plan to take out my heads soon and send them out to get ported by loyd elliot so any info would be great. Thanks

Re: removing lt1 heads

its not bad, but like everything else i guess. some people pull them in an hour and some take 2 days. i followed the shbox.com guide for the cam removal. this shows you the steps to get everything undone on the top end. obviously, ignore the removal of the waterpump, timing chain and optispark. it got me where i needed to go.

stock cam? if so, you'd be better off swapping cams before pulling the heads for porting

and FYI, it can be of benefit too buy a set of used heads from someone too send off for porting and when they are done and you have them back, pull yours off and sell them. this really saves on down time

I replaced both of my head gaskets in about 8 hours said and done. This was spread out over a couple months though while the car was down. But the time spent on the heads alone were about 8 hours, not knowing what I was doing. Now I'd say maybe 4 hours for both sides said and done. As long as they've got headers.
