Removing AC Evap & box?

I'm building my own little race car. I'm going to be pulling the engine soon. While its out I also want to delete the AC system but still keep the heater. My only question is in regards to the evaporator and the big box it resides in. How can I remove the evaporator and keep the heater? I don't want to just remove the evaporator, I also want to cut down the size of the big box in the engine bay. Once the evaporator is out is it possible to cut out that box and use a plate to cover the hole but still maintain the heater core and functions? The lines to the heater core go all the way to the fire wall while the AC/evap box w/ lines stick 6"+ into the bay taking up valuable space. I've never removed this setup so I do not know how the heater core is arranged in the HVAC unit.
