While you've got it off you can hose it in Brakekleen... that should remove anything greasy.

I would recommend using a razor blade to remove any of the old gasket material. Then I would use any brake cleaner to remove any oil from the surface. I would recommend using SEAfoam to clean out your throttle body. Do not use brake cleaner to clean your TB out. You run the chance of removing the coating from the throttle blades.

Is it normal for the lifter valley to smell horrible when you first take the intake manifold off?

I have 115K miles on the car, so I guess the burnt oil smell is to be expected, but when I took the manifold off I had to stand back! Pew!

There is a form of anti-carbon coating on the throttle blades.

I remember my buddy was removing a manifold one day and the thing smelled like rotten eggs. It was horrible. I think this is normal with higher mileage cars.

Pretty normal for it to smell. The more miles, usually the stinkier. A really dirty, sludged engine will really stink.

Change your rear end fluid. It will make you feel better about the smell of the engine.

You guys don't like 80-90 in the morning? Come on, gear oil is great, especially when it overflows all over ya.

Had some new gears installed last week and went straight to the interstate for over an hour. Didn't want to do it, but had to and ended up overheating the rear end. Changed it out with new oil today. And the only thing that stinks worse than gear oil is overheated gear oil I'm talking a puke kind of stink.

Also fixed the intake leak last year and the lifter valley stunk too.
