Removed factory oil cooler....Do i need anything

Just needing to know if I need to do anything else I removed the block of the oil cooler and the lines , is there anything else I need to do...I know I need to run a hose from the WP to the bottom of the radiator, is there anything else involved?????

There are studs that hold the oil filter adapter in place..once you take the cooler off they will be too long to tighten the filter. You can either get the appropriate grade 8 bolts to put in there(the studs are grade 5), or you can grind the top of the studs to fix....either will work. I just did this over the weekend, Instead of the normal filter I also installed a longer filter from a 95 Chevy P/U with a 350. It hold like an extra quart or so now too.

You don't have to run a hose between the WP and the radiator; you can cap off the 2 connectons with rubber caps and hose clamps. Mine's been that way for 4 years with no cooling issues.

OK, the oil cooler just threads of the normal oil filter adapter. After that is off, there are 2 studs that hold the adapter the filter threads onto. They are really just bolts with long caps on them...these I believe are for the oil cooler placement...the inside of the cooler has 2 grooves.....these "studs" on the bolts keep the cooler positioned so it doesn't move and loosen up. I tried to put the filter on with the studs in place but they were just a little too long, and the filter wouldn't go on all the way...so i replaced them with normal bolts.

I have a question. Is there a reason you need to remove factory oil cooler?

Yep, there are alot of reasons that you would remove it. First, IMO it is a very poor design that rather than cool the oil it basically heats it. Second, the poor design is easily clogged and I personally have seen a clogged one, and many have had engine issues because of this. 3rd, mine was leaking horribly. 4th, it takes precious space in our engine compartments. 5th, is that many invluding myself have gained oil pressure across the board with the removal...and I think thats a good thing.

The oil heating part is actually good; the sooner the oil reaches operating temperature the better. Once warmed up, the oil will always be hotter than the coolant so it then acts as a cooler. But as stated above, the stock cooler is prone to clogging due to the oil passing through a small screen. Oil starvation is bad so I deleted my cooler also.

Yeah the factory trans coolers use the same principal in that they use engine coolant to cool the trans fluid. It actually makes sense, because a fluid to fluid heat exchanger can be built in a smaller space because it operates more efficiently- also the reason you always put an aftermarket cooler in line after the stock one. And I also expect that running a 160 thermostat (& lower fan temps) will actually prolong the life of the autos in these cars. But anyway, I've never really seen many street LT1s that had much of a need for an oil cooler, although it's not like I can check my oil temp while I'm wailing on it either. I expect you only need it if you're running forced induction or you do some sort of autocross w/ it. In which case they sell remote mount filter kits, oil coolers, etc. Didn't all the Vettes get oil coolers factory though? I've never heard anyone complaining about those.
