Just a regular 12V relay you can get from autozone or any of the parts stores....

Any 30 amp DPDT relay you can source will work just fine. I know the pump doesn't PULL 30 amps, but you don't want to undersize a relay. It heats up in use if it's too small. Just get a 30A and have at it

Double Pole Double Throw, but I don't know why you should need one. Maybe CCCCCYA can explain. Pretty sure most automotive relays are single pole.

Re: Relay For electric water pump??

using a dpdt relay allows you to run the power and ground through the relay, all you need imo is a spst relay , i would just run the power wire through the relay, and ground to the engine or battery neg.
if you already have a dpdt relay...you can still use only one of the sets of the contacts , if they burn out ...switch to the other set

Re: Relay For electric water pump??

I like the DPDT for reasons of wanting to source an indicator light from same input line as the actual device, but not on the physical line to the pump. I don't like splices, and the DPDT lets me wire it a little cleaner. It's all personal preference though, as you are absolutely right. You don't need a DPDT, all you need is an SPST. They are indeed a lot easier to find than DPDT relays, and cheaper to boot.

That is a good idea. I don't like to splice wires either. So where is your indicator light located at? That's a pretty good idea.

If you use a pole of the relay for a light, isn't it just going to tell you that the relay has operated and not the the pump is actually running?

painless wiring - water pump relay

kindda $$ compared to a DIY relay setup, but at least you know it will work well and look acceptable.
