Recommendations for exhaust system?

When I purchased my z28 it came equipped with Edelbrock TES Headers. I did a little research on them and concluded that they aren't that great. Edelbrock TES Headers Besides the headers, the exhaust system on the z is stock. I decided to check out Edelbrocks website and they had downloadable exhaust sounds. If you follow the next link, hit exhaust systems in the left column under Automotive Parts, and then click on the 2nd link from the bottom titled exhaust sounds and from there I imagine you could find the z28 files. Full z28 edelbrock exhaust I don't think that this sounds bad at all. I know that playback through the computer isn't exactly the best gauge of what it will sound like in real life, but on my speakers it sounded pretty deep and not rediculously loud. The sound I'm looking to achieve is slightly louder than stock, with a deeper tone. I don't want something that will inhibit my ability to talk to someone or listen to music. I also am not looking to spend rediculous amounts of money on a car whose primary purpose is daily driving and occasional bouts of speed. What would you recommend that it isn't too much money and creates a nice a sound? My friend has Flowmasters with a straight pipe and it sounds pretty nice but it's almost raspy to an extent and too loud for me at times. The Edelbrock headers that are on my car are rusted and nasty looking, and hold a price tag of about 350$ new. Should I even bother replacing them or just get a catback and maybe a y-pipe? Thanks for any help that can be given.

Yea the edlebrock headers arent that great..Catback wise you cant go wrong w/ a hooker catback...looks excellent, flows good, sounds great, and its cheap...or you could go the cheap route w/ a cutout..Flowmaster catbacks dont really flow that great if you do a search on em you'll see

Well if you want a cool exhaust without shelling out alot of money you should look into mufflex cat back exhaust. It uses a Spin Tech muffler. My exhaust has two spin techs and a x-pipe with no cats, but that is done by a shop here in my town and not exactly emissions legal and all that. With the headers you could send the ones you have to jet hot and get them coated then they will always look good and not rust,or by long tubes that are coated. it is just up to you.

I ditched my flowmaster after longtubes. It sounded terrible. Picked up a hooker system, and was skeptical at first. After a week, it got a lot louder and meaner. Two thumbs up, I love it now that it's broken in. Can't beat the price either

I have the hooker on my car. Got it from summit for less than $300 shipped. I don't think it's in there catalog but if you look it up online it's there. It sounds pretty good. I have it along with mac mid length headers and no cat. It's pretty damn loud.

I went ahead and purchased the Hooker Super Competition Cat Back system through a place called Performance Automotive Warehouse up here in the SFV. Around 315$. Paying a little bit more than most people paid on summitracing or jegs or whereever they got theirs, but I can pick it up at my own convenience. Do you think i should bother replacing my headers or just tough it out with the Edelbrock TES headers?

I have to put my vote in for a true Dual setup, 3in with Dynomax bullets and turndowns. You could prolly put together a universal X pipe kit stainless for around 200-250 bucks done and It sounds so damn good.
