Recalibrating Speedometer?
Recalibrating Speedometer?
How do I recalibrate my speedometer? I just bought the car and it came with 17 in 2002 SS wheels, is this the cause of the speedo being off? Can I recalibrate it myself or do I need to take it to a shop. Is inexpensive or....? Thanks in advance for all the input. Cory
It's done via the PCM if you have a '94-'97.
Anyone with a PCM programmer can do it (including myself, email me if you're interested).
'93s, however, I believe use a gear or something of the sort up near the speedo? It's not PCM based as far as I know...

It is a very simple procedure if you have a computer and a cable that connects to your PCM port. Otherwise, you'll need www.pcmforless.com (Bryan)... I think he is about $100 plus he upgrade other stuff on your computer which is who I originally went with. Also, www.madz28.com does custom progamming (MadWolf). He seems to have a good reputation too.

Don't know about the dealer.
Something is wrong if you are off by that much on stock gears and tires that are sooooo close. Programming might help, but something is definately wrong. It isn't difficult to re-program if you can get a program..... otherwise, I wouldn't count on a dealer. Perhaps your seller had different rims on, then swapped them when he sold it which accounts for the different MPH...

I don't have my laptop with me (I'm at work). but you can flip through the TABS to get to the tire section. I believe it is the last tab on the bottom row. Then there is a section that accomodates Tire Size and Gear Ratio. Also, you can really fine tune the tire rotation with the RPM (Rotation Per Mile) tab... (can't off hand remember the exact title)... essentially, it is the number of rotations the tire will make in a mile. You can go to Tire Rack.com and get the specifics. I've got SZ50s at 245/50R16 that are rated at 811 RpM. So, I punch in 811 with 4.10 gears.
Make sense? If not, I'll check the laptop later and get the details. But that is how it is done (it's been a few months and too many beers) as best as my memory serves.

cz28s, how do you know your speedo is off?

i know the speedo is off because when i drove it back home the person that was in the other car that we went to pick the car up in told me how fast she was going and thats not what my speedo was reading. that was on the HWY i was reading 60 and she was doing closer to 70. the higher the speeds the farther off it goes. like if im on the city streets 35mph limit the it reads about 31 and im actaully doing 35. catch my drift? anywho i think its just the wheels and im tryin to find someone local to reprogram it for me.
